Japanese Reference Materials for Studying Japanese Cinema at Yale University: Film Yearbooks

Overview

Yearbooks are an important source of data on the film industry year by year. Eiga nenkan is the primary yearbook and can provide industry and box office statistics, lists of films produced, a chronology of the year, and a detailed directory to the studios and other institutions, their personnel, and activities. You can sometimes even get contact information and early editions featured critical essays. More recent, but short-lived yearbooks like Nihon eiga and Eiga iyābukku (and the Kinema Junpō yearbooks, which are listed in the Filmographies section) are notable in providing such critical essays.
