This is a Guide for YUL staff to help identify scripts and which selector they belong to.

Scripts not displaying?

Hint: if some fonts aren't displaying:

  1. View this page in firefox or chrome.
  2. Make sure the browser character encoding is UTF-8
  3. Else: look at the language name page in Omniglot

Common languages at YUL

  • Arabic script (RTL) can be used for these languages, plus many others:
    • Egyptian Arabic: لغة وحدة بس ماتكفيش ابداً
    • Modern Standard Arabic:  لغة واحدة لا تكفي
    • Moroccan Arabic: واش كتعرف العربية؟
    • Arabic [Near East, Southeast Asia, South Asia]
    • Azerbaijani, Turkish [Near East]
    • Persian/Farsi, Baluchi, Pashto [Near East, South Asia]
    • Urdu, Brahui, Dari, Konkani, Kashmiri, Rajasthani [South Asia]
    • Bosnian, Kazakh, Kurdish, Kyrgyz, Tatar, Uyghur, Uzbek [Slavic/East Europe]
    • Malay, Tausug [Southeast Asia]
    • Hausa, Beja, Somali [Africa]
  • Syriac alphabet (RTL) can be used for these languages:
    • ܘܗܘܬ ܟܠܗ̇ ܐܪܥܐ. ܠܫܢܐ ܚܕ ܘܡܡܠܠܐ ܚܕ.
    • Aramaic [Judaica, Near East]
    • Syriac [Near East]
  • Avestan (RTL) can be used for:
    • Avestan [Near East, South Asia]
  • Pahlavi (RTL) can be used for:
    • Avestan [Near East, South Asia]
