Guitar: Search & Browse

A guide to resources on the guitar, lute, and music for guitar or lute.

Searching for Scores and Recordings

Quicksearch Advanced Search is a good way to begin. Click on the link to see all catalog records that refer to the guitar. You may add terms to this search, or use the facets along the left to hone in on scores or recordings of interest.

At any point you may go back to the Search Results list and click on Modify Search to return to the advanced search screen and edit your search.

If the search results are too broad, try using Guitar as a subject word rather than a keyword (All Fields).

For other search tips and examples, see the Music research guide, Search Library Catalogs tab.

Quicksearch Results List

The Quicksearch results list will show you brief information. For more detailed information, click on a title in the list.

Tips from a Quicksearch Record

The sample record below includes links to similar items, such as "creator" (composer), series titles, subject headings, and related names ("also listed under"), in this case Boccherini, as the work relates to him, and Segovia, who did the fingering.

One really important field is the Uniform Title, which is not linked. Copy the title in this field and paste it into a search box, then choose the field label "Title Begins With" to find other editions and recordings of this work. In most cases the Uniform Title will be unique to a particular work.

The Available From box gives the library and location and call number where the work is shelved, as well as request links. During the COVID pandemic, you may request items be placed on hold for you to pickup, or have them mailed to your residential college, dormitory, or home in the US. Please do NOT request a scan - we cannot scan most scores due to copyright. The record above also includes a link to HathiTrust, where you may view an online copy of the score.

Searching for Recordings

Using the Uniform Title from the example above, a search retrieves several recordings.

Open the Author/Creator box on the left to view the names of all the performers, as well as composers of other works on the recordings. In this example, there are thirteen catalog records associated with Segovia - the score, and twelve recordings.

You may request recordings from the Music Library Recordings Collection at the circulation desk.

Note that several recordings are available online for you to listen to via streaming audio.

Common Subject Headings

Some representative subject headings are below.  Note that guitar is not always the first instrument.

Note also that the following links point to Orbis, rather than Quicksearch. You may use the same subject headings in Quicksearch. If a heading is more than two words long, enclose it in quotation marks: "electric guitar music." This will search for the phrase and give more precise results.
