Japanese Reference Materials for Studying Japanese Cinema at Yale University: Biographical Dictionaries

Overview

Biographical dictionaries can help you find out about individuals: their life, their filmography, what they looked like (through photos), even how you read their names. The Kinema Junpō dictionaries tend to the most thorough while also being individual: different editions can offer a different perspective on a single person. The bias, however, is towards directors and actors, so it is helpful that books such as Nihon no eigajin feature other film personnel.
