FIELD LIBRARIAN

What is a Field Librarian?

The Field Librarian (FL) program is designed to assist Yale College students who are going to study or do research abroad. Starting in the summer of 2009, all Yale College students who are taking a Yale Summer Session Study Abroad course, or are spending any length of time abroad to pursue a research of their own will be matched with one or two Field Librarians depending on their destination, their course, or research topic.

At the same, all Faculty members who are teaching YSS Study Abroad course are matched with the same Field Librarian(s) who has been assigned to their students.

Your FL serves as a single point of contact for the Library – a resource person for all of your research needs while abroad.  He or she will contact you a couple of times during the summer (or your period abroad) to check and see how your course or research is progressing, and if you need any help in regard to Library or information resources.  You are also encouraged to contact your Field Librarian(s) with any questions you have about your study or research abroad, and how the Library can support it.  How often you choose to avail yourself of your FL is entirely up to you.

Based on the Personal Librarian (PL) program, the Field Librarian differs from it in two principal ways:

  • The duration of the relationship, which is limited to the period of time students spend abroad, and
  • The fact that FL assignments are defined by student destination, course or research topic.

Students who are planning or considering a study or research trip abroad and would like to have a Field Librarian should contact Graziano Krätli (graziano.kratli@yale.edu) or Emily Horning (emily.horning@yale.edu). Please be sure to provide the following information:

  1. Your destination country (or countries)
  2. Your research topic or field
  3. Your major (if declared)
