Course Reserves: Using Classes*v2 for Course Reserves

What do I need to know about Reserves?

The Yale University Library has significantly expanded its reserves service with a new reserves management system that is fully integrated with Classes*v2 and Canvas and other learning tools in use at the university. This page is dedicated to submitting course reserve requests through Classes*v2.

Please note:

  • Reserves lists should be initiated by clicking the "course reserves" tool in Classes*v2 OR Canvas
  • Whenever possible, reserves requests should be made online through the tool
  • Linked syllabi are no longer being provided to schools using Classes*v2

Starting a Reserve List

Reserves lists must be initiated from Classes*v2. It only takes a few clicks!

  1. Click on the class you want to configure
  2. If you see the "Course Reserves" tool then skip to step 5
  3. Otherwise, add the tool by clicking "Site Info" then "Edit Tools"
  4. Next check the box for "Course Reserves" and press continue
  5. Now you can click on the "Course Reserves" tool in the left pane. Select the semester for which you wish to create the course.

You're all set and ready to start placing items on reserve!

Placing an Item on Reserve

Items can be added individually to a reserve list. This can be done even after items have been imported from a previous class.

  1. Click on the "Add Reserve Items" button
  2. Select if you want to place the material on print or electronic reserve
    • for an eReserve, leave the box checked
    • for a print reserve, uncheck the box
    • Note that you can also place other file formats, including images, short videos, and audio files on eReserve - just leave the box checked

      (IMPORTANT NOTE: Streaming audio reserves should be requested via the Variations Online Audio Reserves Library (VOARL). Streaming video reserves are not currently available.)
  3. Fill in as much information as you know. The following form shows the minimum amount of information required to fill an eReserve request
    • Work title, author (last name, first name), and date are required
    • Please supply at least the publication year in the date field. For serials a more precise date will help us locate the item more quickly
    • eReserve requests should preferably include a chapter or article title and/or inclusive page numbers 
  4. Tag the item - students will be able to filter by these tags (e.g., week 2, assignment 1, etc.) otherwise all materials will appear in one long list. We recommend that you tag by week or class number so as not to have to retag items if you reuse the items next year.
  5. Let us know how to obtain the item
    • I'll upload a file: Upload a PDF to be placed on reserve
    • It's already online: Provide us with a link that goes to the item. We will monitor the link to make sure it stays active and accessible.
    • I'll bring a copy in: If you wish to put your own copy of an item on reserve then select this option and let us know where you would like to drop the item off and for how long you would like it to circulate.
    • Let us find it: The library will take over the request from here. Just let us know where you want it physically placed on reserve and what circulation policy you would like to apply. Note that you cannot place items for 24 hour or 3 day reserve at the Haas library. For eReserve requests, we will scan the reading and make it available online through the Course Reserves tab on Classes*v2.
  6. If you are uploading a file, you will be prompted to select the file and upload it. Otherwise you're done - library staff will contact you if there are any questions or problems that emerge while processing your request.

Importing Items from a Previous Class

Reusing items from a previous class can save significant time in both data entry and reserves processing. Follow the subsequent steps to import items.

  1. Click on the " Add Reserve Item" button
  2. Click on the "Import material(s) from a previous list" link
  3. Select the course from which you would like to import items
  4. Uncheck the items you do not want to import
  5. Click on the "Import Items" link at the bottom of the page.

You're done! Additional items can be added either individually or from another course as described above. Ereserve items will be made available instantly on the activation date of the class. You can check the status of print reserves from the course page.
