Medical Education and Wellness Resources for the OBGYN Department: Opportunities to Grow as an Educator

Resources at Yale

Yale Center for Medical Education led by Janet P. Hafler, Ed.D., Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning the Center for Medical Educations provides “a centralized approach to educator development, professional development, assessment and educational technology programs”. Consultation services are also provided to faculty and learners.  

Resources offer by the Center for Medical Education

Education Technology Support

Consultations are offered on how to use technology to create innovations in learning experiences for students and trainees including developing and launching instructional videos and custom web applications.   


Educator development sessions 
Yale Medical Educator Series (YES):  Bi-monthly on Fridays from 12-1 pm. offered via Zoom, accredited for AMA PRA Category 1 credits and free. Opened to all teaching faculty and learners. 
Medical Education Discussion Group – Monthly sessions on Thursdays at 1pm. Faculty and staff involved in medical education come together to learn and share. Facilitators include Yale faculty members and outside experts in the field of medical education. 
Medical Education Day at Yale - This annual June conference is open to everyone from the School of Medicine, including the Physician Associate Program, the School of Nursing and the School of Public Health. It is strongly recommended that PDs free up residents and fellows to take advantage of this opportunity. Med Ed day date 2024 is Thursday June 6th, 2024; it will be in person for the first time this year since the pandemic. 
Peer observation of teaching – This can be done in a clinical teaching or didactic setting. 

Degrees and Certificates 
Education Scholar Fellowship– previously known as the Medical Education Fellowship- The goal of this fellowship is to develop clinician educators who will provide educational leadership in our departments and at the Yale School of Medicine. One-year fellowship for full time faculty.  19, 2.5-hour sessions between September and May. Goal: develop educators who will provide educational leadership in their departments at the YSM. 1-2 faculty per department can be nominated by their departmental Chair (maximum 14 faculty per year accepted in the program).   


Many members of our department have completed this program in the past (see below list). For the 24/25 program, Dr. Terri Hyunh has been selected and enrolled. Interested faculty should reach out to the Chair of VC for Medical Education.

Master of Health Science - Medical Education Pathway Degree Program – This is a two- year program that features an education research project and provides a comprehensive curriculum for Yale residents, fellows and faculty members interested in developing a career in the field of medical education.  Dr. Scott Casper completed this program in 2020.


TOTAL: Teaching Observation Training for Academic Leaders – This is a new two-part workshop series recommended and created especially for all master course and clerkship directors. We certainly welcome faculty educators who lead other aspects of the curriculum to inquire about joining this training program. 


Medical Education Conferences 


APGO Martin L. Stone, MD, Faculty Development Seminar - The Faculty Development Seminar offers faculty members innovative educational tools to enhance their teaching techniques. Held annually in January. 


CREOG & APGO Annual Meeting - An annual joint meeting organized by CREOG & APGO. Held in late February or early March. 


AAMC Annual Meeting - This annual meeting is an exceptional forum where educators, students, residents, researchers, clinicians, administrators, and health system leaders can build professional connections, expand collaborations, and take part in thought-provoking discussions. 

 

Northeast Group on Education Affairs (NEGEA) - The Northeast Group on Educational Affairs (NEGEA) is one of four regional groups of the AAMC’s Group on Educational Affairs (GEA). The mission of the NEGEA is to foster excellence along the continuum of medical education--undergraduate medical education, graduate medical education, and continuous professional development--by providing a forum for discussing the concerns of the medical education profession, serving as a resource, and acting in an advisory capacity to the GEA and AAMC. The annual spring meeting provides opportunities for exchanging new ideas, learning new strategies, and presenting work in medical education.


Ob-Gyn Department

ACGME faculty development series   10–15-minute PowerPoints with narration by Dr. Audrey Merriam on various med ed topics.  HIGH YIELD!!! Pick one per week to watch and the quality of our teaching will greatly improve!  


Grand Rounds  There are usually Medical Education topics in 1-3 GR per year.  Easily accessible med ed CME credits!!!

 
Peer Observation of teaching:  Contact the medical education staff to set up a consultation.  We have faculty that are trained to provide this service.  If you prefer, we can help you arrange for one of the Yale Center for Med Ed faculty to observe your session (see section above).  

One-on-one consultation: You may request to meet with our Vice Chair for Medical Education or other medical education leaders in our department or at the Center for Medical Education. 

Mentorship Training Program: This program is modeled off a course that has been used by YCCI and Yale Internal Medicine for several years. Four faculty from the OBGYN department, who completed the YCCI program, adapted it for our faculty and led it for the first time in the Summer 2024. We are hoping to continue offering it yearly so that over time all OBGYN department faculty are trained to be effective mentors.

Faculty Development Programs 
APGO Academic Scholars and Leaders (ASL) Program - Its purpose is to enhance education in obstetrics and gynecology by preparing ob-gyn physician faculty, through a rigorous 15-month curriculum, to possess the skills and knowledge necessary to be 
outstanding teachers and educational administrators. 


APGO Surgical Education Scholars (SES) Program - The SES Program is an 18-month journey in teaching ob-gyn faculty how to develop and implement surgical education curricula and conduct surgical education research projects at their home institutions. Various surgical procedures and concepts will be used as vehicles for teaching scholars how to transfer skills and knowledge to their students. Ideal scholars for this course will already be proficient in ob-gyn
