Welcome to the working space for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) funded research project investigating data information literacy (DIL) needs of e-scientists. With the continued evolution of technology driven research or "e-science" impacting the skills necessary for effective data management and curation, a curriculum designed to effectively prepare the next generation of scientists for the dynamic nature of research becomes necessary. This project, consisting of research teams from Purdue University, the University of Minnesota, the University of Oregon, and Cornell University, aims to develop and implement a DIL curriculum in conjunction with university faculty to address these needs.
DataONE's educational resources include data management modules (ppt format), webinars, screencast tutorials (each about ~1m), stories about successful and unsuccessful data management experiences, and information about in-person training activities.
Our training programme aims to equip researchers and data custodians with the skills they need to share and preserve data effectively. Ultimately, tools and approaches will evolve over time, but if all stakeholders understand the bigger picture they will be in a better position to make critical decisions that best reflect their individual needs.
With this in mind, DCC training courses make use of the curation lifecycle model as a means of contextualizing the range and nature of roles and activities required to maintain access to data over time. The DCC also encourages the transfer of knowledge and best practice among data custodians, producers and users. In this way, you will be able to share your skills and the responsibility for data curation with others on your research team.
This is a non-credit, free course which provides guidelines for good practice in research data management. The course is particularly appropriate for postgraduate students and early career researchers who work with data and would like to learn more about managing their research data. The course content is mainly geared for three disciplines: geosciences, social and political sciences and clinical psychology, however, many of the issues covered apply equally to all research disciplines.
NECDMC is an instructional tool for teaching data management best practices to undergraduates, graduate students, and researchers in the health sciences, sciences, and engineering disciplines. Each of the curriculum’s seven online instructional modules aligns with the National Science Foundation’s data management plan recommendations and addresses universal data management challenges.
