Digital Reformatting and Microfilm Services: Digital Photography Services

Overview

The YUL Digital Photography Service utilizes a professional photographer to provide high quality digital photography of Yale University Library collection materials for all library units. The service is intended to serve the needs of internal YUL units* (business-to-business ), not to interact directly with outside customers. Outside customers requesting photo duplication of any kind will deal directly with the YUL unit owner of the materials. That unit will then place requests for photography with this service as needed. The service was created to handle the Library’s internal digitization needs that were formerly provided by Yale Photo & Design (YP&D).  YP&D ceased operations in April 2016.

*Yale departments outside of YUL seeking similar digital photography services should contact Preservation.Reformatting@yale.edu to discuss arrangements.

Services & Fees

By default, the service provides uncompressed TIFF image files, captured at 400 ppi in accordance with FAGI digitization standards, in 24 bit color, at 100% of the original size of the item.

TIFF files are suitable for full-size, full-color publication. Other specifications, image manipulation, processing, and outputs can be arranged as needed.

YUL units should charge outside customers for digital images from the YUL Digital Photography Service according to the suggested retail prices listed below. At this time there will not be an internal transfer of funds between YUL units.

Placing an Order for Service

Download the form below to request digital photography. Email the completed order form to Preservation.Reformatting@yale.edu

For orders of more than 5 items, please use the tab named “Item Data (follow this pattern)” on the attached Excel spreadsheet. Once you complete the order form, you will see the data from the first 5 items transferred to a column layout. Simply follow that pattern starting at row 6 for your additional items. This will provide us with the necessary details to process your order without the need to complete multiple Excel order forms.

Getting Collections to Us

The service is offered by the Digital Reformatting & Microfilm Services (DRMS) unit of the YUL Preservation Department at 344 Winchester. All materials to be photographed should be transported to 344 Winchester according to the Protocol for Special Collections Transport to and from 344 Winchester.

Please note that when using Library Collection Services (LCS) to pick-up and transport materials to 344 for this service, units should stipulate “DRMS 344” as the drop point on the online form. The DRMS unit of the Preservation department has its own location drop point in the system.  Do not use the drop points for YUL Techincal Services or the Preservation Department.

Original materials will be returned to the owning units according to the same protocol.

Images File Delivery

Image files created by the service will be transferred using Yale digital file transfer services.
