Finding Primary Sources

To browse the shelves for books by or about early Christian authors, use the call numbers BR65 or BR1720. Then use the first letter of the author's name. For example, Ambrose = BR65.A....

Series and Collections of Early Christian Writings in English Translation

The following volumes collect Christian writings (in translation) from a variety of sources and time periods:

Ante-Nicene Fathers (ANF) by A. Roberts; J. Donaldson 10 volumes. ANF covers Christian works written up until 325 CE. Helpful index. 19th century translations and attributions are dated.
Nicene and post-Nicene Fathers (N/PNF) I by Philip Schaff 14 volumes. 325 CE – 5th century. Augustine & Chrysostom. 19th-century translations and attributions are dated.
Nicene and post-Nicene Fathers (N/PNF) II by Philip Schaff 14 volumes. 325 CE – 7th century. Eusebius et al. 19th-century translations and attributions are dated.
Ancient Christian writers : the works of the Fathers in translation Multiple volumes.
The Fathers of the church
Translated Texts for Historians Online available. Many late antique Christian writers represented.
Translations of Christian literature Classic, often dated, translations. Supersedes the older "Early Church Classics" translation series.

Corpus Christianorum Series Latina Supplants Migne's Patrologia Latina with new critical texts using choice manuscripts.

Cetedoc library of Christian Latin texts : CLCLT / Universitas Catholica Lovaniensis Lovanii Novi. 4 CD-Rom discs. From 1991-2000, this series assembled Christian texts in Latin from across several major editorial series.

Corpus scriptorum Christianorum Orientalium: Scriptores Aethiopici. Christian texts in Ethiopic. Online available.
Corpus scriptorum Christianorum Orientalium: Scriptores Arabici Early Christian texts in Arabic. Online available.
Corpus scriptorum Christianorum Orientalium: Scriptores Syri Early Christian texts in Syriac. Online available.
Corpus scriptorum Christianorum Orientalium. Scriptores Coptici Early Christian texts in Coptic. Online available.

Corpus scriptorum Christianorum Orientalium: Subsidia
Corpus Christianorum Series Graeca Many volumes. Replaces Jacques-Paul Migne's Patrologia Graeca. Fills gaps in the Patrologia Graeca and redoes defficient editions. Priority given to post-Nicene authors.
Corpus Christianorum Series Apocryphorum Multiple volumes. Ongoing.
Corpus scriptorum ecclesiasticorum latinorum Online available.

Patrologia Latina Database
Patrologia Orientalis A collection of patristic texts from the Christian East, including works, recorded in non-Latin languages, that come from geographical, cultural, or religious contexts linked to Rome or the Eastern Roman Empire. It allows users to access texts as a PDF file or as a searchable translation.
Patrologiae Graecae
Patrologiae Graecae contains more than 160 volumes of Greek material (with Latin translations) relevant to the study of the history of the Christian Church from its beginnings through the Council of Florence in 1439.
