Reflections on Bindings: Blind Stamped Bindings

This guide is an online version of the exhibit "Reflections on Bindings: Using New Imaging Technology to Study Historical Bindings" held at the Lillian Goldman Law Library Rare Book Collection

Tools and Techniques

This tool is a roll. It impresses a repeating pattern onto the surface of the binding.

By looking at how the image repeats on a tooled binding, it is possible to discover if it was created with a roll, and to digitally recreate the order of the design elements on the roll.

Panel stamps are large designs engraved into metal or wood. They often depict historical or allegorical figures.
