OHAM holds interviews with renowned blues musicians from John Lee Hooker to Hound Dog Taylor to Big Mama Thornton. Many of these blues greats worked across genres throughout their careers. For example, A number of the singers in Duke Ellington’s band often incorporated blues elements into their vocals, though they are primarily remembered as jazz singers. Big Mama Thornton, for instance, is largely remembered as an R&B innovator—a result not only of her band’s sound but the broad commercial appeal of her music combined with the re-categorizations of genre initiated by the popular music industry of the 1950s and 1960s.
