Orienting Yourself to Library Resources in Science and Engineering at Yale: What Do Librarians Do?

A guide for new-to-Yale graduate students, postdocs, faculty, research scientists, and other people looking for information about accessing Yale resources in sciences and engineering.

Research Consultations

Many people don't know what library liaisons do, and it's okay to be uncertain!

Depending on the nature and complexity of your request, you could be matched with us — your Science and Engineering Librarian team — or another member of the Research and Learning Team. For example, we have Outreach and Instruction librarians who may be involved with general orientation programming or teaching reference management in a nonspecialized context. Please email marx.reference@yale.edu to get started or use the appointment scheduler(s) on this page.

What Can We Help You With?

  • Linking Overleaf/LaTeX to reference management software (e.g., Zotero)
  • Advising on citation formatting; troubleshooting reference management tools, such as Zotero or EndNote
  • Database searching
  • Finding older articles, which are frequently cited incorrectly; we’ll do our best to help you find them
  • Constructing advanced queries, such as for authors or teams
  • Identifying subject-specific data, statistics, and patent information
  • Testing and reporting back to you on AI features that our database providers are implementing
  • Managing expectations about AI tools
  • Working with you to brainstorm keywords and topics for searching
  • Orienting you to new products and services
  • Locating specific resources for you that can help with your research question
  • Brainstorming how to extract and use research impact metrics, such as the h-index, or broader impact assessment strategies (e.g., the Becker Model indicators)
  • Instructional support for basic and advanced courses (where they intersect with library resources)
  • Orientations and tours
  • Engagement with summer programs
  • Consultations with senior essayists
