What is in this Guide?

This guide is both an Instructional Tool and a Discovery Portal for e-books in visual arts.

  • The guide gives an overview of some of the best online resources for discovering art and architecture materials in e-book format.
    • Each resource has been given a dedicated tab above that describes the resource, provides examples of art and architecture items found inside that resource, and gives information on how to search and use it.
    • While most of the resources provide primarily e-books, many contain materials in various other electronic formats: articles, dissertations, images, manuscripts, etc.
    • WorldCat.org is the only resource here that does not contain any electronic content, but rather provides links to e-books and other content whenever possible via its "Find A Copy Online" section in each item's record.
    • You will need your Yale NetID and password to access some of these resources.
  • The guide also contains information about e-books, file formats, general information about searching and evaluating information from electronic resources, and links to further technical information.

NOTE: Searching Orbis will not find all of these e-books and other electronic content. Orbis does not yet have or connect to catalog records for all of these items.

  • To find e-books in Orbis perform an Advanced Search, and change the Type to Books and the Medium to Electronic Resources.
  • There is no way to search all of these resources at once, so consider searching each one when you start a research project.
