A. Kanji dictionaries
1. Daijiten, 大字典 compiled by Ueda
2. Shōkai Kanwa daijiten, 詳解漢和大字典 by Fuzanbō. This is the dictionary (1952 or later edition) referred to by the F-numbers in Nelson’s character dictionary.
3. Dai Kanwa jiten, 大漢和辞典 compiled by Morohashi, 13 vols. (RJ 5829/0453) Good for difficult-to-find kanji and compounds. The OED for Chinese learning.
4. Nihon sengokushi kan-wa jiten, 日本戦国史漢和辞典 Muraishi, Toshio, 1930-. Murata Shoten, Showa 62 [1987]
B. Kana Dictionaries
5. Kōjien, 広辞苑 by Shimmura Izuru (RJ 5830/0423). This can be used for contemporary language; say, for words that do not appear in the Kenkyōsha New Japanese English Dictionary.
6. Nihon kokugo daijiten, 日本國語大辞典 by Shōgakukan, 20 vols. (1972-76)
7. Dai Nihon kokugo jiten, 大日本國語辭典 5 vols.
8. Daigenkai, 大言海 5 vols. (RJ 5831/4400.1) The latter two have complete character indexes.
9. Iwanami Kogo jiten, 岩波古語辞典 Iwanami, 1974. Older words, 43,000 entries
10 Kadokawa Kogo Daijiten, 角川古語大辞典 Nakamura Yukihiko, Okami Masao and Sakakura Atsuyoshi.
