Music in Schools: Special Collections

A guide for music educators in New Haven about library services and collections, in support of the Yale School of Music's Music in Schools program.

About Special Collections for Music

Special Collections for Music are spread throughout the libraries, though the highest concentrations are in the Gilmore Music Library and the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library.

  • The Gilmore's Music Special Collections includes rare editions of books, scores, and periodicals; manuscript scores; and archival collections (mostly the personal papers of composers and musicians).
  • Historical Sound Recordings includes about 270,000 private and commercial recordings from the beginnings of recorded sound to the present.
  • Oral History of American Music is a collection of interviews with composers and musicians.

Searching for Special Collections

Once again, Quicksearch has searches that link to special collections (Archives or Manuscripts search) and digitized collections (Digital Collections). Thumbnails in the results link to online digitized special collections.

Digitized audio and video are in the Aviary platform, and may be browsed there, but links will also be found in the Archives or Manuscripts results.

Many works are in the public domain and therefore freely accessible to any interested researcher. Others require only an online registration and acknowledgement of copyright in order to access digital content within minutes.

Visitors may also register as special collections researchers and either schedule visits to study the special collections onsite or request reproductions to be delivered online using the request links from Archives or Manuscripts records.
