Overview

The Music Library holds one of the foremost music collections in the world, occupying 25,000 square feet on three levels within Sterling Memorial Library, 120 High Street.  Our entrance is from the corridor running between the Sterling Memorial Library (SML) nave and the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), on the main floor of the building.

Study Spaces

The Listening Center (first floor) has equipment to play recordings on CD, LP, and cassette tape, as well as video recordings on DVD and VHS.  Headphones may be checked out at the circulation desk. There are also study tables.

The Reference Room (mezzanine level) has large study tables and houses the collections of Composer's Collected Editions (M3's), Monuments of Music (M2's), and reference books: dictionaries, bibliographies, and catalogs.

Patrons requesting to study paper-based special collections will be served in the Manuscripts and Archives Reading Room in Sterling Memorial Library. 

Seminar Rooms

Two seminar rooms are available for classes using music materials.  The rooms include state-of- the-art wireless monitors and speakers for viewing or listening to streaming media, DVDs, & CDs.  Computer presentations & playback or viewing may also be made through the wireless monitors. The room has a computer setup to accommodate virtual attendance over Zoom as well as in-person (12 seats). Book a room by going to 

Historical Sound Recordings has a seminar room for classes incorporating HSR collections or for research appointments. The room accommodates 12-14 people comfortably. Contact: Mark Bailey, Head (mark.bailey@yale.edu)
