You can control some aspects of the look and feel of these embedded searches. Either type of embedded search can be customized as so that only specific formats, dates, languages or subjects are returned.
Here is an example to try. When you execute you'll see that newspapers have been excluded, and results are brought back from beyond the Yale collection. These options are indicated in the refinement facets on the left. You should see that as you enter text search there is an autosuggest feature which shows possible search terms.

This is an embedded widget. You can use this to show the user some results while keeping them in the Libguides interface. Results are brought back into the widget box.
You can create a Summon search that is targeted for users of your Liguide.
How you do it:
1. Go to http://yale.summon.serialssolutions.com/widgets
2. Decide if you want a search box which takes your user directly into the Summon interface, or you want to insert a widget which will bring results back into your Libguide.
3. Depending on your decision, click in that area of the Widgets page.
4. Limit the search from the available options under Search Setup. You can limit to
exclude newspapers
only include peer-reviewed journals
particular subject terms or disciplines
English only (or other languages)
Publication years
5. Go to the Get Code tab area. Copy the text that displays.
6. Insert a Rich Text Box in the Libguide. Edit text and then use the Plain Text Editor (this is very important). Paste the code from the Summon Widget.
Here is an example: it is scoped to English only, articles published after 2010, with the subject heading technology. It includes articles and newspapers.
