Student Assistant Guide: FAQ

Commonly Asked Questions

Q: Where can I find a restroom?

A: To the left of the main entrance is a single use unisex restroom, to the right is the men's restroom. The women's restroom is around the bend on the left-hand side of the main entrance. There is also a restroom located in the Historical Library. On the basement level (E-Level), there is a men's and women's restroom.

Q: Is there a water fountain?

A: On the basement level (E-Level), there is a water bottle filler to the right of the elevator. It can be accessed via stairs by going down and turning left at the doorway. There is a water fountain and water bottle filler combo between the restrooms on the basement level. The quickest way to get there is by using the stairwell in the Historical Library (to the left of the entrance).

Q: I would like a quiet space to study.

A: The History Library and the Morse Reading Room are considered quiet study spaces.

Q: How do I reserve a room?

A: On the back of each computer there should be taped a QR code with instructions on how to reserve a room. There are extra slips on the desk. Bookings can also be done through this site: Home / EMS (yale.edu). There are also touchpads outside each classroom that patrons can use to reserve the room. Note: rm115, combo classrooms, and the Cushing Center Conference Room require bookings at least two days in advance. More information can be found here: CWML Room Reservations.

Q: I would like to speak to a librarian about (insert topic)?

A: You can ask for the patron's school or program and then provide them with the card of their personal library to either email or book a meeting. Personal librarian information can be found here: Personal Librarian for Students. If the patron would like immediate assistance, please go to the Circulation Supervisor for assistance. If no one is available, please encourage the patron to send an inquiry to askyalemedicallibrary@yale.edu and a library staff member will answer their inquiry as soon as possible.

Q: I am returning this book late and may have a fine.

A: We do not typically enforce the payment of late or overdue fines. Fines are only paid for the replacement of a lost or damaged item, and those fees are charged through the patron's Bursar account. To waive a fine, please note down the patron's NetID and bring it to the attention of an Access Services staff member.

Q: I would like to renew an ILL book.

A: For ILL renewal requests, patrons can email docdel@yale.edu (this is printed on the pink slips located on the ILL book). Note that renewals are determined by the lending institution, so they can be denied. Patrons should receive an email informing them whether their item was renewed.

Q: I am a visitor, and I would like to see the brain room (Cushing Center).

A: If the pass to the Cushing Center is not located in the labeled slot, please ask your Circulation Supervisor to retrieve it. For visitors, a personal item (usually a form of ID) needs to be held at the circulation desk while they are in possession of the pass.

Q: I need access to the elevator to go upstairs.

A: If the Elevator key (swipe card) is not located in the labeled slot, please ask your Circulation Supervisor to retrieve it. A personal item (usually a form of ID) needs to be held at the circulation desk while they are in possession of the pass.

Q: Is there a vending machine nearby?

A: There is not a vending machine in the library, but there are three located in the Hope Building. To get there, exit the library doors and turn left (towards the stairs opposite the women's restroom). Go up the stairs and down the hallway until you reach the brick wall. At the brick wall turn right, then take the stairs to your right. Go up an additional flight then turn right again and walk down the hallway (you should see a long table in the hallway opposite windows with a view of Cedar St).  Through the doorway at the end of the hallway are the vending machines. They accept card and cash.

Q: Any question about stats

Patrons can schedule consultations with Marx's StatLab. All consultations are virtual. There is a QR code with the link taped on each circulation computer.

Q: Do you have a paper shredder?

We do not have a shredder onsite. However, we have shred bins that are locked and emptied by a professional company once a week. There are three shred bins in total. One is located just outside of the ADS office, and two are located on either end of Info Commons.
