The Collection of Western Americana consists of books, manuscripts, maps, art, prints, photographs, and printed ephemera which document the exploration, settlement, and development of the Trans-Mississippi West through World War I. The collection, renowned for its holdings in nineteenth-century government surveys of the region, also contains extensive material about the history and culture of Native American communities throughout the West, and on the history of the Spanish Southwest, and Texas.

(Series I), 1568-1946 (inclusive), 1800-1900 (bulk). This series contains pamphlets relating to the agricultural, cultural, economic, historical, legal, military, political, religious, and social development of Mexico. More than 6,000 pamphlets are included with the bulk of the material published during the 1800s.

1568-1949 (inclusive), 1800-1880 (bulk). A collection of pamphlets from Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Panama, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Uruguay, Venezuela, the West Indies, and other Latin American and South American countries. The pamphlets document the agricultural, economic, legal, military, political, religious, and social activities in these countries.

1522-1915 (inclusive), 1770-1865 (bulk). A collection of correspondence; government documents, including reports, commissions, decrees, and awards; church documents; and writings and poems from Mexico on civil, military, economic, religious, and social topics. An addition consists of photographs by Mario Bucovich.

1810-1896 (inclusive), [microform]. The papers consist of correspondence, a journal memoirs, documents, printed matter, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, maps, photographs and memorabilia relating to William Tecumseh Sherman. The journal relates to Sherman’s Mexican War service.

James Lowry Donaldson was an officer in the United States Army, 1836-1869, who served in the Second Seminole War, military occupation of Texas, the Mexican War, and the Civil War. He was chief quartermaster of the Department of New Mexico from 1858 to 1862.

1858-1862. John H. Clark, a member of the Mexican Boundary Survey in 1854 and 1855, was appointed by Congress in 1858 as United States Commissioner for the Texas Boundary Survey, to be conducted jointly with a Texas Commission. The survey established the boundary of Texas from the westernmost tip to the Red River.

1850-1859. Papers include correspondence with Secretary of State Lewis Cass, the President of the United States, and John S. Black, United States Consul in Mexico, concerning the lawsuit, Andres Castillero v. United States, in which the federal government tried to gain title to the mine.

Ending the Mexican War, between the government of Mexico and the general of the U.S. forces preparatory to the actual ratification of the treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, 1848 Feb 22.

1851-1914 (inclusive), [microform]. The records are chiefly original letters from territorial governors and secretaries, journals of executive proceedings in the territory, and other papers.

1814-1847 (inclusive), [microform]. The records consist of confidential and unofficial letters sent from the Secretary of War, U.S. Department of War, 1814-1847. Topics include the War of 1812, the Mexican War, Great Britain and the northern frontier, military contracts, and personal matters.
