Music Databases: nkoda library app

A guide to music focused databases available to the Yale Community

About nkoda

  • The nkoda library has the full scores, complete sets of rental parts and educational materials (e.g. methods) for more than 100,000 titles
  • Titles are licensed from more than 130 music publishers, including Boosey & Hawkes, Ricordi, and Bärenreiter Verlag.
  • nkoda adds an average of 1,000 new works to the library every month.
  • The library is accessible on nkoda apps which are available on Android, Windows and Apple devices, for both mobile and desktop use.
  • There’s also nkoda's browser-based version which can be used to search for works, share them with others, build playlists and save materials to your library.
  • Using nkoda's score reader, students and teachers can mark up any score or part from the library and share their work with others.
  • Musicians can also use nkoda's score reader with PDFs of scores from outside the nkoda library.
  • nkoda offers free and unlimited upload storage.
  • All faculty, staff and students at Yale may use nkoda.

Using nkoda

  1. Can I download or print?  No
  2. Can I save to offline? Yes, you can save materials ‘offline’ in case you need access to them when you don’t have access to the internet.
  3. Can I view scores from nkoda on several devices? You can be signed-in on multiple accounts simultaneously, but can only view content on one device at a time.
  4. nkoda is working on a solution to allow music educators to share their screen with a class, as we realise how integral that activity is for teaching.
  5. What countries can I use the app in? nkoda is available in all countries worldwide that support the app stores listed above. So pack nkoda and take the music you love wherever you go.
  6. Due to nkoda's agreements with publishers, not all works are available globally.

Discovery

The app offers three ways to search the nkoda library:

  1. keyword search functionality has been optimized to deal with data from different publishers and in multiple languages.
  2. The Master Composition search works by filtering entries, first by composer, and then by composition.
  3. The Master Composition also acts as a container for all editions related to a composition.
  4. There is a complete and searchable index for all artists and composers as well as publishers.
  5. For more information see nkoda's Discover page.
  6. nkoda's help center - even more information.
