Japanese Reference Materials for Studying Japanese Cinema at Yale University: Photos/ Posters/ Programs

Overview

There are many non-celluloid elements of film culture that are essential in understanding the larger environment that defines a film or cinema, ranging from the theater to advertisements. There is often a need to find copies of photos, portraits, posters, handbills and posters. Below are some collections of such materials in alphabetical order. Japanese exhibition has long emphasized handbills and programs, which are sometimes rich with information: they can show how a film was not only advertised, but also defined through commentaries and other discourse. Books of posters (posutā) and stills (suchīru) can be of assistance even to those who cannot read Japanese well. Also check out the Japanese Film Ephemera Collection for actual handbills and programs in the Yale Library.
