Petroleum and Energy in the Geosciences: Home

This guide is a window on resources for petroleum and other energy resources.

Let's get started!

Do you need to find information on oil fields, the oil, petroleum, and gas industry, or on other types of energy? If so, you've come to the correct place! This guide will walk you through a few very helpful concepts and resources that we have available locally.

  • Search strategies in Articles+. This page will show you tips and techniques for locating information about very large (and very new) oil fields in Articles+ using several key facets. You can use similar searches for many kinds of petroleum and energy questions!
  • Reports, Articles, & Industry Research. The information you need won't be in just one place — you'll need to make use of a large cross-section of our article & abstract databases to find what you need.
  • Online reference and research materials. Depending on what you need, you may need to consult a Treatise or two — such as the Treatise on Geomorphology or Geophysics or Geochemistry. These contain entries signed by eminent researchers that provide topical overviews and key information about concepts.
  • Government information. Congressional hearings, research reports, and other recorded activities of governments can supplement information you find elsewhere. Often, company executives, commerce-related associations, and researchers will testify and/or produce reports.

Some energy-related information is held in other subject guides, such as those used in F&ES. To the right, please find a list of other places that will be helpful if your question is really sticky. You can also email one of us (see the contact info at the right) with questions.

Welcome!

Open Access at Yale

Yale University Library supports many open access initiatives through membership fees. These include preprint servers like the arXiv and medRxiv, Knowledge Unlatched, the Biodiversity Heritage Library, Reveal Digital, the Technical Report Archive & Image Library, and the Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics. Read more about our open access initiative support here.

Are you about to publish? Yale Library has agreements with some publishers that provide discounts when you publish with them. For PLOS and Cambridge University Press, the article processing charges to publish open access are completely waived. To learn more about your options and the details of our agreements, visit the library's guide to open access publishing support.

Guidelines on what the library supports and our strategy for choosing initiatives are available here.

Some of our databases have filters that allow you to see what is being published open access, including the Web of Science and Scopus. If you want to see what Yale authors have published under open access licenses, for example, do a search on Yale University using the Institution/Affiliation filter, then narrow down to open access in the results.
