A guide for musicians and scholars aimed at bringing to light the work of composers and musicians from diverse and underrepresented groups

The Black Sound & the Archive Working Group at Yale University was a two-year initiative funded by a university grant designed to “support humanities programming, with an emphasis on teaching, intellectual life, and events that will attract visiting scholars from around the world.” Academic years 2019-2020 and 2020-2021.

The Grant Hagan Society is a graduate-student led affinity group to support people of color in Yale University’s Department of Music.

Directed by Professor Braxton Shelley, the program links scholars in the Department of Music, the School of Music, the ISM, the Divinity School, and the Department of African American Studies, fostering interdisciplinary exchange. It aims to organize and expand the scholarly attention paid to the music of the Black Church and to this tradition’s extraordinary influence on a host of musical cultures—confessional and commercial, American and global. Drawing on constituencies at Yale, in New Haven, and beyond, Music and the Black Church hosts a concert series, residencies, symposia, and course offerings.
