David M. Potter was a professor in the History Department at Yale University from 1942-1961 who focused on framing the history of the American south within a national perspective. Professor Potter would be posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his 1971 book The Impending Crisis, 1848-1861, an in-depth analysis of the causes of the Civil War.
